Mediastinal tumours, which are also known as neoplasms are the abnormal growth of tissues, occurring in any area of the body. Mediastinal tumours begin in the mediastinum. It is the area in the middle of the chest between the sternum bone and spinal column. This area comprises of vital organs such as heart, trachea and oesophagus. These tumours can develop either in the anterior, posterior or middle portion of the mediastinum. These tumours can be caused due to various reasons such as lymphoma, thymoma, thyroid mass mediastinal, tracheal tumours, bronchogenic cysts and vascular complications like the swelling of the aorta. Mediastinal tumours exhibit certain symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, fever, chills, sweating, unexplained weight loss, hoarseness, respiratory blockage.
Mediastinal tumours can be diagnosed by CT scan of the chest, a MRI of the chest and mediastinoscopy along with a biopsy. Location of a mediastinal tumour is crucial in determining the right treatment for you. Surgery is often the last resort for removing the mediastinal tumour. This treatment is followed by radiation and chemotherapy to kill the remaining cancerous cells. Your oncologist will rule out the best treatment route depending on your condition.
