LIMB SALVAGE SURGERY

Limb salvage surgery, which is also known as limb-sparing surgery is a miraculous way of avoiding amputation of patients in case of bone cancer or another kind of cancer that may require removal of tendons, soft tissues and even bones. The main aim of a limb salvage surgery is to carefully remove a tumour without causing any harm to the nearby tendons, blood vessels and nerves so that the limb and its functionality are maintained.
Limb salvage surgery is an excellent option for cancer that spreads at a slower rate, in limb salvage surgery the surgeon removes the affected tissue and the tumour along with an inch of the surrounding healthy tissue. If any part of the bone is removed it is thereby replaced with a metal rod, prostheses or bone pieces also known as grafts. Muscles and soft tissues from the other parts of the body are then used to close the wound. The replacement bone then fuses with the original bone over time making the movement of limb possible thereafter. Limb salvage surgery is used along with radiation or chemotherapy to minimise the bone loss and make the surgery easy.
